Moorea: The Island You’ll Never Want to Leave (And What to Wear While You’re There)

A few years ago, I spent Thanksgiving in Moorea (also written “Mo’orea”) with my family, and let me tell you—I’m still not over it. As someone who loves exploring new places, Moorea is one of those rare gems I would happily return to over and over again.

This little slice of paradise in French Polynesia feels like the lovechild of a postcard and a daydream. Picture turquoise lagoons so clear you can see the ocean floor, lush green mountains that look like they were drawn by an artist, and sunsets so spectacular they practically command applause. Moorea is a destination where relaxation and adventure meet—and yes, I’ll throw in some fashion tips for the trip, because, well, it’s my job….anddddd what’s a trip to Moorea without fabulous resort wear for a tropical vacation?

Moorea’s Cool Backstory

First, a little history lesson, because Moorea isn’t just a pretty face. The island’s name, which means “yellow lizard,” comes from Polynesian mythology, and its jagged peaks are said to resemble a lizard’s tail. Back in the day, Polynesian navigators explored the Pacific from Moorea, long before modern technology came into play. These days, it’s more catamarans than canoes, but the island’s deep cultural heritage still shines through.

Where to Stay: Luxe Bungalows & Boutique Charm

Whether you’re splurging on luxury or opting for laid-back vibes, Moorea’s accommodations are as dreamy as the scenery.

Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort

If you’ve ever wanted to sleep in a postcard, this is your spot. Overwater bungalows with views of Tahiti across the lagoon? Yes, please. Pro tip: This resort is Insta-gold.

Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa

Equal parts luxury and adventure, this resort has overwater bungalows and garden villas with private pools. Plus, snorkeling here feels like swimming through a living aquarium. Want to experience the hotel but don’t want the price tag that goes with it? Go to the bar for drink and an appetizer. The staff is incredibly welcoming.

Green Lodge Moorea

For a more boutique experience, Green Lodge Moorea has eco-friendly accommodations with Polynesian charm. It’s perfect for anyone who wants sustainability with a side of serenity.

Airbnb

You can experience the beauty of Moorea without the pricetag of an expensive hotel. Check out Airbnb for all sorts of options. Most places on the island are either on the water or within a short walking distance to it.

We stayed at Fenua Mataioa, a one-of-a-kind bed and breakfast style boutique hotel owned by a lovely French woman. We had our own apartment and private deck for our family. There were all sorts of kayaks and paddle boards at our disposal for a nominal fee. Totally worth it. Here's one of the many stunning views we had from our deck.

What to Do: Beyond the Scenery

1. Explore by ATV

Zoom through pineapple plantations, volcanic valleys, and jungle terrain on an ATV. The views from the Belvedere Lookout are so epic, you’ll feel like you’ve unlocked a secret level of life.

We booked through ATV Moorea Tours and had a blast. ATVs are in great shape and the tour felt really safe for our family of four. I believe they will pick you up at your hotel in a van. We walked from ours.

2. Snorkel at the Moorea Lagoonarium (or anywhere, really)

The Lagoonarium is like a VIP lounge for marine life. Swim with rays, reef sharks, and fish so vibrant they look Photoshopped. Most outfitters will come and get you at your hotel, either on a boat or in a van.

We booked a half day snorkel tour with Moorea Ocean Adventures that was nothing short of spectacular. We had our own boat and 2 crew members that took us to a few different epic spots to swim with sharks, rays and sea turtles.

3. Hike to Belvedere Lookout

Prefer your adventures on foot? Take the hike to Belvedere Lookout for panoramic views of Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay. It’s a calorie-burning way to justify that extra poisson cru.

4. Visit Tiki Village

Step into the past with Polynesian dance performances, authentic crafts, and a feast cooked underground. It’s the perfect mix of culture and cuisine.

5. Chill at the Beach

Let’s be real—sometimes the best activity is no activity at all. Stretch out on a beach, soak up the sun, and let the island’s magic do its thing.

Pro Tip: Don't expect much surf time. Between the dangerous reefs and the lack of rentable surfboards on the island, you might as well get under the water with a snorkel instead of trying to ride the waves.

Where to Eat: Island Flavors to Savor

Moorea Beach Café

This cafe is a chic spot with French-Polynesian fusion dishes. Bonus: The ocean views are so stunning, you’ll forget to check your phone.

Snack Mahana

Laid-back, local, and delicious, this spot serves the best poisson cru (raw fish in coconut milk).

Roadside Fresh Fish

Locals sell freshly caught fish along the roads of Moorea. It’s simple, authentic, and absolutely delicious. All you have to do is drive or ride a bike along the main road parallel to the water and you'll find some. Go late morning for the best options.

Pro Tip: Some restaurants offer free transportation to their establishments because it's not always easy to rent a car on the island (nor necessary).

What to Pack: Fashion Meets Function
